Volume-to-mass swaps (cups to grams, for example) require an ingredient density, so when you switch flour, sugar, butter, or honey, the math accounts for the fact that a cup of flour weighs ~120 g while a cup of honey weighs ~340 g. The output shows the converted amount plus a rounded "kitchen-friendly" version — 113 g becomes "about 4 oz" so you can actually scoop it.
Most home recipes are written in cups; most accurate baking and bulk-buying happens in grams or pounds. When you order 5 lb of butter from a producer on brothh and the recipe asks for 2 cups, you need to know that is a pound. Price-per-unit comparisons across grocery, CSA, and direct-from-farm only work when the unit is consistent. Getting this wrong means over-ordering, under-baking, or paying a hidden premium because you compared per-cup to per-pound. Direct-from-farm goods are usually quoted in pounds; the supermarket wraps the same item in 8 oz packs and lists per-ounce price.
Density values come from USDA FoodData Central reference weights for common pantry ingredients. Volume factors use US customary cups (236.588 mL) and US tablespoons; switch the source/target if you have UK or metric cups. Rounding is intentional — kitchen scales rarely resolve below 1 g and measuring spoons round to 0.25 tsp. For exact lab work, use the raw decimal output, not the friendly form.
